PROTECTING THE MINISKIRT: HOW A TREND IN AMERICAN FASHION BECAME A PROPONENT OF SOCIAL CHANGE

In my eyes, miniskirts are a quintessential staple of one’s wardrobe. Though they typically find their notoriety in mainstream fashion during the months of spring and summer, I don’t think there’s ever a temperature too low to forgo such a timeless piece.

MIND YOUR THOUGHTS, NOT MY CLOTHES

There is this long-standing notion in society that inexplicably links a woman’s respectability to how conservatively they dress. Although, for one part, modesty has respectable roots in religion— typically to promote ideals allied with holiness and purity. The other perspective to this norm is bound to a lengthy history of female oppression.

THE BEAUTY IN UNCONVENTIONAL DRESSING

Only two months into college, I have come to showcase my true style more than ever before. I don’t even think twice about throwing on a mini skirt and tights with a cute top — now as familiar as wearing jeans and a shirt. I branched out of my comfort zone and purchased vintage embroidered jeans, skirts with buckles and lace, and sweaters of all kinds. Dressing apart from what you feel is socially acceptable comes with an indescribable amount of freedom.
